FC Geno-Paolo di Canio’s side were denied a dramatic comeback in the Champions League draw on Tuesday evening as the Italian giants drew 1-1 with Milan in their opening game of the Serie A season.
In the first half, Genoa were forced to make three substitutions as they looked to put away a difficult task.
But in the second half, Giuseppe Marchetti’s men took control, forcing a number of goals from Alessandro Di Stefano, Marco Varela and Mauro Icardi to put them on course for a 3-0 lead.
Genoa had the better of the early exchanges, but Milan continued to hold the advantage and were rewarded when the home side’s captain, Giampaolo Cappello, made an excellent save to deny Di Stefanno.
Milan then went close to adding to the lead in the 71st minute when a low cross from Mario Balotelli found Di Stefanna, who nodded it past the helpless Andrea Iannone.
However, a second-half substitute from Marchetti restored Genoa’s lead.
Genoa would go on to win 2-1.
