DOT says most of its bus fleet will be replaced with buses and trains by the end of the year.
Metro says the change is part of a pilot program that started in January and will last for the next few years.
DOT says the buses will be powered by hybrid electric motors and will operate on electric-only lanes and on shared transit lanes with an average speed of 30 miles per hour.
The goal is to increase the use of Metro’s electric buses by 25 percent over the next 10 years, and the fleet will also be equipped with GPS sensors and cameras that will make them safer and more reliable.
